There are painful relationships throughout this book. So far, which ones are you relating to the most? Why? I know I want to feel hopeful about Stuart and Skeeter. She seems to need a soul-mate, someone who really understands her. Somehow, I’m not convinced he is going to turn out to be good for her—but I hope he is.

The Help: Week 3 - Chapters 11-15
There are painful relationships throughout this book. So far, which ones are you relating to the most? Why? I know I want to feel hopeful about Stuart and Skeeter. The ordinary life that each of the main characters lead are all through the pages. There is growth and fear and pain and hope in each of their lives. I really like seeing how Aibileen writes out her prayers to God and finds this to be a way to help her write her story. I also like the relationship between Aibileen and Mae Mobley and how she is trying to speak truth into the little girl's life.
I think the relationship between Skeeter and Aibileen is the one I am relating to the most. Aibileen wants to tell the truth, but isn't sure she can really trust. Skeeter thinks she wants to know the truth, but is finding it may be more than she can handle because she is starting to care what happens to Aibileen and Minny if they are found out. I guess I relate to this more because I live in Africa and have house help that I also consider a friend - but there is still a sense of separation because of the employee/ employer relationship that gets mixed in there. Skeeter and Aibileen have a friendship of sorts that is in the making, but the prejudices of their culture and time make it that much harder.
Thanks for commenting, Lynn! My heart really goes out to Mae Mobley. I can't imagine the hurt, anger and confusion in her little heart. Your observations about Skeeter and Aibileen's relationship help me to remember that friendships can be built even with tradition and prejudice are working to prevent them. That gives me hope even in the mess of building trust--which, for these two women, will take time, events, and many conversations.
