The Help: Week 6--Chapters 28-34

This week’s reading brings more truth to the light. Skeeter’s mom has been keeping something from her. Why do you think she didn’t want Skeeter to know she has cancer? Have you ever held back the truth in order to protect someone? Has someone protected you from truth? How do you process that?

Page 410 includes these words: “Did I hear right? I say with my eyes. Your heard right, Louvenia’s say back.” We communicate in so many ways. Across the room a shrug of a shoulder, a quiet smirk, a quick nod can say more than paragraphs of words can say. These chapters reveal secrets—send secrets scattering. The implications and consequences are real. Which ones surprise you, hurt you, challenge you?

I’m finding it hard to say good-bye to some of the women in these pages. Some of them, I admit, I’d rather never see again—but some of them I wish I could know. Who will you take with you from this book? What lessons did they teach you?

Thank you for reading with me. I’ve learned a lot from your comments and observations!

Reasons for not telling Skeeter about Mom's cancer:
-her Mom could be in denial of the cancer or how bad the cancer really is.
-her Mom might not want to be treated differently because she has cancer
- trying to protect Skeeter's feelings until the last possible second.
I found out a secret about my friend. It happenened a long time ago and she choose not to share it with me. I am honoring her choice of not telling her I know the secret.
The secret of what happened to Constatine made me hurt for Skeeter as she missed out on the relationship while being away at school. The fact that her Mom knew the relationship they had together and when Skeeter came home she still didn't tell her what happened to Constatine. Closure to their relationship will be harder for Skeeter as she did not get the opportunity to say goodbye. It was also surprising to me that Constantine and Aibileen never tried to contact Skeeter after the Constantine left their home. Conststine knew where Skeeter was why did she not continue to write Skeeter? Aibileen might have been able to save the relationship by letting Skeeter know what happened to Constatine.

I would like to take Skeeter home with me because she stood up for a cause that was bigger than one person to tackle. Granted she did have help. Think about the risk Skeeter took.( I am not a risk taker)She got shunned from her friends and they didn't even know the whole story. She also used her talents for good and gave her more confidence to pursue her dream of writing a book The last thing is honesty is always the best quality no matter the loss.

Thank you, Donna, for your comments and insights. I love that you want to take Skeeter home with you--you must have the gift of hospitality. But, you are right--how sad that she had such special relationship with Constantine and yet it was broken by her mom who loved her. The damage we can do to those we love is hard for me to comprehend, but I know it happens.

You are very gracious to your friend. God has given you incredible wisdom and discipline to love her like that. I'm struggling with a friendship right now that seems to be going a bit sideways. Your words encourage me. Thank you!
